Lara Pulver on Benedict Cumberbatch

AX: Irene Adler is famously the only woman to be of interest to Sherlock Holmes. Do you and Benedict Cumberbatch play your scenes as though Sherlock is an emotional, if not a literal, virgin?

I think this is actually quite good. And I’m not even really that into this ship.

Asked by her co-star Una Stubbs, who plays Sherlock’s landlady Mrs Hudson: “So you took it all off?” Pulver replied: “Yes … There’s nothing to hide behind, no mask, and something really empowering takes over.”

Pulver added: “Martin said a few things but they were harmless. They were both supportive and by the end of it I wouldn’t move on to the next line until Benedict had stared at my boobs!”

The actress said she bore similarities to her TV alter-ego, who flirted with Holmes while wearing only diamond earrings, lipstick and heels, and went on to strike him across the face with a riding crop while perched suggestively on a chair.

“There are huge elements of our characters that are us. But I don’t go around whipping people. And I’m not a lesbian,” she told the magazine.

Pulver, whose credits include True Blood and Spooks, said the adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective stories was a hit because it did not “underestimate people’s intelligence”.

She added of the detective: “I think he has so much going on in his genius brain that he doesn’t even think of women as sexual beings.

“A beautiful woman could walk past him naked – as I did – and it doesn’t register.”

Louise Brealey, who plays morgue attendant Molly Hooper, joked to her co-star: “Oh, I think there was a flicker in those ice-blue eyes, Lara.”

Brealey, whose character has a crush on Sherlock, said of the detective: “He’s unattainable, which, for some people, makes him immediately irresistible…

“I remember saying to Benedict when we were doing the pilot three years ago, ’You do realise you’re not going to be able to walk down the street if this becomes a series?’

“He couldn’t imagine himself as a sex symbol … He just couldn’t see it.”

Veteran actress Stubbs said she found her male co-star attractive, and that she liked to “ruffle” up his hair when it was “wild, like Heathcliff”.

She told The Radio Times: “There’s nothing more unattractive than a man who thinks he is attractive.

“I think the fact that Benedict doesn’t think he’s attractive is so attractive to women. Discerning women.”

I think it’s one thing to criticise a programme and another thing to invent motives out of amateur psychology for the writer and then accuse him of having those feelings. I think that was beyond the pale and strayed from criticism to a defamation act. I’m certainly not a sexist, a misogynist and it was wrong. It’s not true and in terms of the character Sherlock Holmes, it is interesting. He has been referred to as being a bit misogynist. He’s not; the fact is one of the lovely threads of the original Sherlock Holmes is whatever he says, he cannot abide anyone being cruel to women – he actually becomes incensed and full of rage.

[Spoilers] This one of my (many) favourite scenes in A Scandal in Belgravia. The reasons are many. First of all, it is both filmed and edited beautifully, the acting is brilliant. I can honestly feel a sting in my chest every time I watch it. And oh god, the music.

But my favourite bit is when Sherlock wakes up; because the first thing he does is to ask for John. That’s the first thing he’s got on his mind after what he’s been through. And that tells me a lot.

Concentrated epicness. I can’t wait! (Spoilers)
