Benedict Cumberbatch On ‘Elementary’ Misquotes, His Secret ‘Star Trek’ Role And More

lornasp:

Last month, “Sherlock” star Benedict Cumberbatch was reportedly quoted as saying some less than complimentary things about CBS’ Sherlock Holmes reimagining, “Elementary,” starring his friend and “Frankenstein” co-star Jonny Lee Miller.

The internet then exploded with speculation and conspiracy theories, before Cumberbatch released a statement to The Hollywood Reporter to clarify that he was misquoted.

On the red carpet for BAFTA’s annual pre-Emmy Tea Party, HuffPost TV caught up with the affable Brit to discuss the misunderstanding — and to try to wrangle some intel about “Star Trek 2” from the Emmy nominee.

There’s been a lot of controversy over this so-called “Sherlock” versus “Elementary” rivalry, and you seem to keep being misquoted all over the place …
I know, I know … The only shame about it is that Jonny and I are friends, and they try to get a fight where there ain’t gonna be none. I’m such a fan of his work, always have been — we worked together very closely in “Frankenstein” about a year and a half ago.

I was so sad to have missed it in London and in its movie theater showingsover here.
There might be another cinema airing of the live recording that they did soon … I think we’d all love, at some point, to do it in New York or [in LA], schedules permitting; it would be a great thing to bring to the States. We’ll see. But that’s what hurt me about it — it’s a very high class problem to have, to be over-scrutinized for every word you say, but when people start quoting you for things you didn’t say, that’s when it becomes a bit weird and you lose control. I just made sure that he was alright and of course he was, because he’s a grown-up. I issued a statement saying “this is not what I said at all.”

I know you won’t be able to reveal anything about “Star Trek,” but I have to ask …
It was an amazing experience … I was bound to say that, but it genuinely was. It was just extraordinary. He’s a wonderful human being to be around, J.J. [Abrams] — on every level, as a dad, as a friend, as a director, as a musician … He’s a polymath, he’s a really talented human being. And he has time for everyone and it’s all done with a really genuine interest in the story. So for all the bangs for your buck that you’re gonna get with the film — which there are going to be aplenty — you have an investment, you care about what’s happening to these characters, so it was really exciting.

Season 3 of “Sherlock” will reportedly begin filming in January. Cumberbatch can next be seen (or heard) in the first part of Peter Jackson’s “Hobbit” trilogy, “An Unexpected Journey,” alongside “Sherlock” co-star Martin Freeman on December 14.

Harper’s Bazaar article with Benedict Cumberbatch and Rebecca Hall.

Phone photos but hopefully not too dreadful. Best I can do until I can get home.

Amazing article! It really feels like just dropping in two friends’ conversation. And they both look amazing… I swear harper’s bazaar makes the most amazing photoshoots!

The article is great fun! Cant wait to have all the outtakes from this shoot.

Benedict Cumberbatch in The Big Issue.

Probably the best piece of press he’s had in the past 2 weeks. Very nice write up.

Do please buy a copy if you have a seller near where you live. It’s a fantastic organisation. I think you can also buy online.

Benedict Cumberbatch: naturally he’s a class act

Long before Sherlock, Tinker Tailor or this week’s Parade’s End, the actor has won plaudits for his work on stage and screen. And his success has had nothing to do with going to Harrow.

While being delightedly force-fed 17 days of splendid drama, one annual question has remained resolutely unasked in medialand this August: when will the silly season start?

It’s great working with Benedict Cumberbatch on Star Trek …but he boasts about being voted Sun’s sexiest man — Simon Pegg

He had a lot of fun working with Sherlock actor Benedict, who readers voted the sexiest man in a Sun poll.

Simon revealed: “Oh, he told me he had won all right.

“We went out one night and he said ‘You’ll never guess what, I am The Sun’s sexiest man’. And I was like, ‘That’s amazing. That is so cool’.”

“Benedict is such a good guy, he’s a really sweet person and I love that he’s getting this success because he’s also a great actor. I worked a lot with him on Star Trek. He is part of the threat in the film.”

I wouldn’t  reall call that bragging xD Full article

BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH IS “VERY FLATTERED AND SLIGHTLY BEMUSED” ABOUT HIS HEARTTHROB STATUS

Benedict Cumberbatch was one of the celeb guests at Saturday’s Veuve Clicquot Polo Classicat New Jersey’s Liberty State Park. He mingled with his Star Trek 2 costar Zoe Saldana, as well as fellow Brits like Matthew Rhys and Clive Owen, who cohosted the challenge with Argentine polo star Nacho Figueras. We snagged a couple minutes at the VIP tent with Benedict, who was flying somewhat under the radar. The much-hyped star of BBC hit Sherlock was happy to talk about the ongoing Diamond Jubilee in his native London, and what it was like joining the Star Trek family. Benedict also touched on what life is like as a newly-minted heartthrob. Benedict said:
PopSugar: We’re here celebrating a very English sport, polo, while back in London, the Diamond Jubilee is going on! Are you excited for the queen’s 60th anniversary?Benedict Cumberbatch: I am exited for the Jubilee. I feel a bit of a treason-worthy abscondee. I planned to have a holiday here a long while after I finished shooting a film I’ve just done. I guess that’s why I am here rather than over there. It’s very exciting. We’ve got three huge events, really, in this next couple of months, this being a kickoff for it. I think, like lots of places in Europe, we need all the home-spun joy and festivities and celebrations we can get at the moment.
PopSugar: Does that mean you’re attending the Olympics?Benedict: I am as much as anyone who doesn’t have a ticket can go to the Olympics. I’m going to avoid all the traffic and maybe see the best events at home, I think. But we’ll see, hopefully. I haven’t really made any plans, to be honest, to go, but I’m really, really excited about hosting it.
PopSugar: You’re obviously talking about Star Trek 2. How was it joining that cast to make the movie?Benedict: Fantastic. Zoe’s just my amazing, good friend. The whole thing was just an absolute blast. I mean really, really good fun. I had a terrific time doing it.
PopSugar: You’re already quite famous for your role as Sherlock. You’re becoming a pretty big heartthrob, with ladies sharing lots of your pictures on the Internet. How do you feel about that?Benedict: Very flattered and slightly bemused. I mean, I wake up in the morning and see the same weird things about me that I’ve seen for 35 years. So I take it with a pinch of salt. But I’m very flattered. I play extraordinary characters, so I think it’s a lot of the back of that. I don’t take it too seriously, but I’m very flattered and keep my perspective on things.
To read what else Benedict has to say about how life has changed thanks to his heartthrob status, just read more.
PopSugar: So has life changed a lot for you lately, then?Benedict: It makes me smile, not that I didn’t smile before. But it makes me giggle a bit, like an idiot … It’s a weird thing, isn’t it? Because people know me better than I know them now. That has changed things. That makes for a very strange first encounter sort of dynamic, if you know what I mean. I can’t be churlish about it. It’s incredibly flattering. I want to do something useful with it, rather than just sort of feel smug about it. It’s a lovely position to be in, and it’s off the back of work that’s been really, really celebrated.
PopSugar: It sure has. Sherlock is a big hit here in the US.Benedict: There’s a lot of joy in it also. It’s just how to use that profile or response. I guess that’s really boring, but I am having fun as well. It’s an extraordinary time in our lives, this. Our generation has a sh*t load of stuff that we really have to pick up the pieces on. It’s quite exhilarating to be in the sort of position where people listen to what you have to say. You have to be very careful with that.

lornasp:

SI: The story goes that you’ve known Benedict Cumberbatch since he was little. True?

US: Yes. I worked with his mother [actress Wanda Venthem]. We used to sit chatting in the park and I’d be with my children and she’d be with Benedict. So I knew him as a little boy of about 4. Very polite. A lovely boy.

SI: Did you ever have to remind him that you’d known him since he wore short pants?

US: He’d already been told by his mother. He was very pleased to see me and then we had a laugh about it. He said he remember standing, waiting hour after hour, while his mother and me gossiped and he said he remembers being so BORED. [in a complaining voice] “C’mon, Mother!!”

SI: His looks are so controversial. An entire Tumblr page has been devoted to showing how closely Benedict Cumberbatch resembles an otter. Meanwhile, others call him this year’s sex symbol. Thoughts?

US: On the street people say to me, “Hi, Mrs. Hudson!” and then it is “Can you get his autograph for me?” One girl I met in a restaurant said, “I’m determined to marry him.” It’s extraordinary. He is a completely original look, don’t you think? One minute he’s not quite so handsome. Then the next minute he’s gorgeous. What is that term? Jolie laide. It’s French for ugly-handsome.
