Topic: People watching Star Trek only because of Ben

cumberqueen submission from caighlee:

HI! Relating to the previous ask, and especially your response, about Benedict in Star Trek and Star Trek can I say that I LOVE YOU?? I’m to young to have grown up with Star Trek, but I would occasionally catch reruns and I loved them. A while before the new movies came out I became a HUGE fan (thanks to my mom & dad) and was overjoyed when it was recreated. However I have to agree with the previous person, I feel some people are now into Star Trek just because Ben is involved and feel that it’s getting a bit crazy. I don’t know how I feel about the movie now and such now that it’s being blown into something kinda big. I also think the pictures are getting to be a bit much and it’s only the first day. (sorry for the rant)

Hi, and thank you!

First of all, I am only 22 myself, far too young to have watched TOS as it originally aired - still grew up with the series on VHS and reruns, though. ^_^

I don’t know how I feel about the movie yet either, but I think we’re experiencing the reactions of a starved fandom. We’ve heard very little about the production (all things considered), and then suddenly: mysterious action pictures! (Which were glorious).Oh, and I am patiently waiting for the day when the first pictures of Benny on the set of The Hobbit are made public. Especially in that glorious motion-capture suit.

However, when it comes to the reactions around Star Trek and fanbase, I understand and expected these kind of reactions from the long loyal Star Trek fans. I really do. But at the same time, I see the possibility of new people discovering Star Trek and enjoying it. Even if it is because of Ben.

I don’t want to say that I have anything against people watching the movie just because of Ben, because I don’t want them to feel unwelcomed as viewers. If anything, I think would feel a bit bad for them, if they were torturing themselves watching a movie they don’t have any interest in at all, in order just to watch this man. Because I would love for everyone to watch the movie with a feeling of curious enthusiasm and joy. I just want us all to have a good time. And I don’t want anyone to feel less entitled to watch the movie. That is my humble opinion, at least.

I would love for others to find the same pleasure in the series (or movies) as I did.

Now, you’ll just have to excuse me. I am completely knackered, and I hope I somehow managed to mash together a not too confusing answer. xD I think I should find my bed now.
