Benedict Cumberbatch has admitted he finds the costumes he wears in BBC One hit Sherlock uncomfortable and hard to breathe in.

The 35-year-old, who plays the title role in the BBC One hit, blamed the discomfort on the fact the costumes have such a small waist. 

‘We all put a lot of thought into his outfits,’ Benedict told the Daily Express. ‘I get to wear very well-cut, good-looking suits although there’s so little waist that sometimes I can’t breathe or digest properly.’

However the actor added he has found it difficult to wear some of his own clothes out in public due to their resemblance to the detective’s garments.  

‘The sad thing is that I had a coat very similar to Sherlock’s before I got the role – it was a present from someone – but I can’t wear it out in public now, which is sad,’ he said. 

Benedict recently admitted he is becoming more like his Sherlock character, and he has also found himself being more observant since taking on the role.

‘As Holmes keeps saying, we don’t ‘observe’, we ‘see’ things,’ he explained. ‘I think if you look at the example of Holmes, or at least what I have learned from playing him, you find extraordinary depth in the smallest detail.

‘So I sit on trains and think, ‘Is that mud on the bottom of a boot? I wonder where he has been. That collar looks a little bit frayed - I wonder whether he has been travelling a while or forgotten his washing.’ You do try to piece together stories from bits of information.’
